Fifteen Husky Rowers Selected To Six U23 National Teams

Will Crothers '09 has offered to keep a log in the run-up to the World Championships.  Updates at the top:

7/25/09:

Huskies win their semi-final; will race in the A Final at 5:42 a.m. Seattle time Sunday, 7/26 (2:42 pm Czech time)

7/21/09:

Right now I'm just hanging out with Tina, aka Conlin, in his and Tony's, aka Anthony's room watching some TV before bed.

Today was one of those sick days at the regatta where you see a lot of the crews. Not everyone has arrived yet but the course was packed with boats. Apparently this is supposed to be the biggest U23 Championship to date. It's a fun day though because you go out for that first row and the whole point of that first row is to get used to your surroundings. So you're check'n out other boats and sizing up any competition you see row by, I usually try to pass any them if you are heading in the same direction while looking as relaxed as possible. Tina says he usually gives them the old stink eye. Anthony whispers sweet nothings into my ear from three seat. Max usually keeps his distance, and pays no attention. We actually talked about this a bit today because Anthony and Conlin were trying to tell Max and I about how they thought they were more intimidating then us, but both Max and I agree that the Dawgs' Bark is less important then the Bite.

Alright well the night before the night before is the most important time to get a good sleep so I'm out!

"The Four Best Friends"

Attached are a couple of photos taken after our pieces we did yesterday afternoon. You could tag it something like "4 best friends" or "Canadian Husky Four" or something like that.

You are right though, it's really cool to be able to row with guys you have built a really strong bond with in our program. Every other time that I have been to worlds (out of 7!!!) there is always that stage where you have to get to know a few guys from other schools, or from the other side of the country. It was definitely nice to skip that stage and go right to the "honey moon stage" as they call it. Huskies for life.

So we just arrived at our hotel in Prague, called the Hotel Duo. It's a classic European hotel that kind of reminds me of Germany. It's one small room with two small beds and another small room that is your bathroom; probably has the funkiest looking thing that is supposed to be the shower. I kind of like it though, because if you've raced in Europe before this is what all the hotels feel like and they give you that distinct feeling that racing is getting closer now.

Alright, dinner time in Prague now. We'll get to rig and row at the course tomorrow, we'll let you know how it goes.

7/19/09:  So yeah things are going well out here for the husky four. We've been at our training camp now (in Holland) for 6 days and things are starting to heat up now that we are adjusted to the time change. Today we did a test of our warm up which went well after a few tweaks here and there. Later today we will do a real test of our speed with a 1500 meter piece and a 750 meter piece before heading to the Czech Republic. This morning we are sitting around watching euro sport, catching up on some of the latest action in the tour de France, while talking a bit about the race. Everyone is pretty excited to test our speed against some other crews to see what's really under the hood. Well it's nap time four the "four best friends" as we call our boat, but I'll give you another update in a day or two.

On a funny note the four of us did manage to capture a duck and release it into the girls team cabin.
